Why Health is MORE than Counting Points

Why Health is MORE than Counting Points

As news is swirling around the new Weight Watchers program targeted at teens - I find myself, like other dietitians, concerned about the message that teens must now focus on food “points,” in addition to focusing on their school work, friends, families, and everything else.

.

.

.

When hearing this program my mind went back to a team talk I did with a local women’s softball team. They admitted they skipped meals. They admitted they were worried about eating too much and gaining weight. They were worried that they weren’t beautiful. Maybe WW isn’t as restrictive but it can be obsessive thinking that if I can get just one point less then I’ll look like my super skinny friend.

.

.

.

We need to change our messaging to our young adults. Health is more than being skinny/losing weight. And nutrition is more than a diet. You’re beautiful/handsome/awesome just they way you are. If you want to focus on your health - that’s great! Let’s do so because your body deserves the best treatment NOT as punishment. This includes healthy eating but it also includes eating out with your family one night or enjoying an ice cream dessert with someone special. Health is worth so much more than 20 points a day -

This really speaks to me. I have gained weight do to a pretty significant lifestyle change because of my profession. I’m always obsessing that I have to get back to my old weight and constantly coming up short. I like the idea of changing my mind set from punishing my self with diets to giving my body the best treatment it deserves. Thank you for your expertise!

Jace - I'm so glad this spoke to you. You are wonderful just as you are. And nourishing your body changes the mindset completely. I wish you the best of luck on your health journey and if there's any way I can help, I'd love to be of assistance!
